We’ve released this colorful WordPress theme as an example of some of the things that can be done with Wrapper. If you like the design or not, this is a big step. We are rendering standards compliant XHTML from a standard WordPress CMS. It was remarkably easy to put together and we’re working on other designs and templates for all the other major CMS packages now. You can look at it as say it’s pretty much like every other blog, but the huge difference is that it is rendering in 100% in Flash. Anyone who is a Flash guru will say amazing but let me break it down for the others. Wrapper is now at a place to compete with the other development platforms. We’ve solved many of the standard design issues with HTML/CSS development and have made huge improvements over working in Adobe Flex or strait ActionScript especially in terms accessibility. Wrappers setup eliminates compiling so search engines will have full access to this blogs content. The base of being able to render all your visuals and being technically more advanced then the competition makes Wrapper viable in our minds. The reason I talk so optimistically about it this release is because of what this base set of features will enable us all to create next. The nature of Flash isn’t as limiting as HTML, the simple advancement of being able to rotate anything is huge graphically. Support for alpha HD video layers and 3d transitions will be nice also. Wrapper’s plug-in architecture will make development of any of this as simple as compiling a few open-source libraries together and calling an event. These next steps are not to far away and I urge the community to get started while we further perfect the workings of Wrapper itself. If you’re working on something let us know. Motion & Color has released Wrapper Beta open source, an ActionScript based HTML/CSS browser
New York, NY. — January 2, 2008 — Motion & Color Inc. today open-sourced a public beta version of Wrapper, formerly used for closed-sourced projects. Wrapper is a cross-browser compliant HTML/CSS rendering engine written in ActionScript that sits on top of your standards compliant HTML page. Wrapper eliminates cross-browser issues and makes integrating ActionScript and HTML/CSS projects possible without needing to compile. Wrappers strives to answer the most common problems web designers face without forcing them to learn too many new things. Most web sites can be created in HTML or CSS, then when you need to extend Wrapper’s capabilities you can either use JSON to call functions within ActionScript or you can load compiled plug-ins. Wrapper also has built in methods within CSS to load custom fonts, display elements as any shape, and fill them with linear or radial gradient background colors. ActionScript’s event model is also implemented within Wrapper’s HTML. Wrapper’s best features are the ones that you get for free because of how it is set up. It’s like getting all the great features of the Flash Player without needing to deal with compiling and being able to create your content the same way any HTML page would be created. Wrapper is fully accessible to the search engines and integrates well with any back-end technology.
Members of Motion & Color have been working on this technologies for years and have created many sites with these ideas. Wrapper is the newest embodiment of these concepts and Motion & Color is dedicated to it’s advancement and the advancement that Wrapper will bring to the internet.
